The weather here was very nice for my first few weeks, but it has recently taken a turn for the worse. Yesterday, I wore five layers of shirts and jackets, and I was STILL freezing. I’m not following monkeys today, though, so I was able to spend a couple hours this afternoon huddled under blankets (another research assistant told me I looked like a homeless person, which may have also had something to do with the state of my hair) watching “Life of Pi”. Our communal cat, Maya, was hanging out in my room. We keep Maya around to kill the mice at Bush Camp (so that dangerous snakes aren’t drawn to our rooms), but she was the runt of the litter and is apparently a pretty terrible hunter. As I was watching the tiger in “Life of Pi” hunt for fish, I turned to Maya to say, “Look, you’re a domesticated version of that”. JUST then, Maya leapt up, practically flew over me, and launched herself at the wall. She had somehow spotted a mouse, grabbed it, and set it down on my bed. I hurriedly ushered her and the mouse out of my room before my bed got all bloody. However, being the little runt that she is, Maya didn’t actually kill the mouse, but just played with it for a long time. It was like watching an episode of “Tom and Jerry.” Ultimately, I think it may have actually escaped back into my room. I can now hear a bunch of little things scurrying around, so I’m fairly certain there is a small family of mice living in my room. I’m thinking of naming them after the different snake species that might now come and get me in my sleep (I think the first two will be called “Puff” and “Adder”).
